  Prior to having ankle fusion surgery I researched Dr. Rizek on- line and read about wait times, how young he is and about his ”beside manner”. I went to my first appointment with an open mind and did wait. I also was given my options and clear instructions on what he expected of me for him to do surgery as I am a stupid smoker (my words, not his.) For my follow up appointment I researched my options and prepared a list of questions to ask him. All my questions were answered without a lot of fluff or over explanation which I personally liked. Dr. Rizek also explained (with great concern) any possible complications of the surgery I chose. Because everyone feels pain differently and heals at different rates, medicine is not an exact science and there are some questions that cannot be answered with exact details. This Doctor may not have 20 or 30 years of surgical experience but his education and training is current. I personally like knowing this as my previous family Doctor of over 30 years was too set in his ways. He told me there was nothing that could be done about my ankle when in fact there had been several new options available for many years. Waiting for a specialist is not exclusive to Doctor Rizek, it is the unfortunate inconvenience of an overburdened health care system and the fact that emergency surgeries happen. If he seems rushed, he is! I don’t like waiting any more than the next person and get ticked too, but at least we have professionals like him in this country. I have met with Doctor Rizek at least eight times before and after surgery. He is polite and to the point and I did not find him rude or lacking compassion. I found he has a sense of humor and loved the fact that he smiled when he looked at my last set of x rays and told me the fusion had worked. Lastly, do your own research on any options available to you and make a list of questions. Make sure to know what you will need for care after surgery. I found that between the Doctors office and the Hospital there seems to be an oversight on who gives out this information. Again, thank God I did my research! I would recommend Doctor Rizek to anyone and I would ask to be referred to him again should I require an orthopedic surgeon in the future.
